The population
Nepal has a population of almost 30 million, including 3 million in the capital Kathmandu and its valley. The population is 85% rural, with a literacy rate of 70%. The country forms a multi-ethnic and cultural society, with over 80 ethnic groups present in Nepal.
Hinduism (80% of the population) and Buddhism (11%) are the 2 main religions practiced and omnipresent on the streets of Nepal's towns and countryside.
The language
The country's official language is Nepali but Nepal has over a hundred other languages and dialects. In business, industry and tourism, however, English is spoken. English. The religious texts of the lamas are written in Tibetan.
The economy
Nepal's economy is one of the poorest and least developed in the world, with over 40% of its population living below the poverty line. Tourism and agriculture are the 2 main sectors of the national economy. Nepal nevertheless has real potential for development in hydroelectricity and tourism. Prospects for development in other sectors are limited by the country's technological backwardness and constraints.
The currency
The local currency is the Nepalese rupee (rps), but it is also possible to pay in euros and dollars in Kathmandu and the major cities.
